Saddle Up Right: A Step-by-Step Tacking Up Guide for Beginners
You've groomed your horse. You've picked out their hooves. Now comes the part that makes many beginners nervous: tacking up.
It's not complicated—but it does require a system. Do things in the right order, check your work as you go, and you'll never forget a step. Rush or skip, and you could end up with a loose saddle, a sore horse, or a dangerous ride.

Step 1: Lay Out Your Tack
Before you touch your horse, lay out everything you need—saddle pad, saddle, girth, and bridle. Place them on a clean rack or over a stall door, never on the floor. Check each piece: is the girth clean? Are the stirrups adjusted to your length? Is the bridle assembled correctly? This prevents you from leaving your horse tied while you run back and forth.
Step 2: Place the Saddle Pad and Saddle
Position the saddle pad on your horse's back, slightly forward of where the saddle will sit. Slide it back into place to smooth the hair and prevent rubbing. The front should sit just behind the withers—not pressing on them.
Now gently lift the saddle onto your horse's back. Place it down softly—don't drop it. The front of the saddle should sit just behind the withers, leaving enough clearance at the top. Check from behind: the saddle should look straight. If it's tilted, adjust before moving on.
Step 3: Attach and Tighten the Girth
Walk to the other side of your horse and bring the girth up. Attach it on both sides. Tighten just enough to hold the saddle in place—don't crank it tight yet.
Why? Your horse will "blow up" their belly. Tighten in stages. Lead your horse a few steps forward to let them relax and settle the saddle. Then tighten a little more. You should be able to fit two fingers between the girth and your horse's side.
Step 4: Put On the Bridle
Stand at your horse's shoulder and hold the top of the bridle in one hand. Gently slide the bit into their mouth—use your thumb in the corner of their mouth to encourage them to open. Pull the crown piece over their ears and buckle the throatlatch, loose enough for about four fingers.
Check that all straps are done up, the noseband is not too tight, and the bit sits comfortably without pulling at the corners of the mouth.
Step 5: Pre-Mount Check + Helmet
Before you put your foot in the stirrup, run through this final check:
