The Story Behind the Design

We started with a sketch. Pencil on paper, like we do with every RiderAtelier piece.

Our lead designer drew galloping horses for weeks, trying to capture that one moment when all four feet leave the ground. The first attempts were too stiff—the kind of drawing that looks like a photograph rather than something alive. The one we kept came together late one night after she'd spent the afternoon watching her own horse run in the field. The motion finally clicked.

We tested a lot of fabrics after that. Some were too stiff. Others too flimsy. We landed on a 210g/m² four-way stretch that moves comfortably and holds the print well. It breathes, dries quickly, and works for year-round wear.

The dusty teal took a few tries too. Some samples were too green, some too blue. The final shade sits in between—dark enough to hide barn dirt, but different from the usual black or navy. The floral stripes came in toward the end. The horse print on its own felt a bit heavy, so we added softer elements to balance it out.

What It's Actually For

This top works well for daily riding, barn chores, and casual outings. It's not for competition—we don't claim it is.

The quarter-zip is practical for layering over a base layer when mornings are cool. The sleeves offer sun protection and warmth. The fabric stretches enough to move with you in the saddle or when you're bending down around the barn. It also offers UPF 50+ protection and moisture-wicking, which helps on warmer or sunnier days. And it's machine-washable.

The fit is true to size. If you prefer a looser feel, size up.
