How to Choose Equestrian Wear for Your Body Type: Fit Tips That Actually Flatter

by Emma H 05 Jul 2026 0 Comments

You've seen the photos. Sleek riders in perfectly fitted breeches and tops that look like they were made for them.

Then you try on the same style and wonder: Why doesn't this look like that on me?

Here's the truth: riding wear isn't one-size-fits-all. Different body types need different cuts, fabrics, and fits. This guide helps you find what works with your shape — so you feel confident and comfortable in the saddle.

Breeches by Body Type

Curvy or Pear Shape (Wider Hips and Thighs)

  • Look for: High-rise waistbands, four-way stretch fabric, full-seat grip

  • Avoid: Low-rise breeches, stiff fabrics

  • Why: High-rise stays put and smooths; stretch lets you move freely

Athletic or Straight Shape

  • Look for: Mid-rise or low-rise, knee-patch styles, slimmer leg openings

  • Avoid: Excess fabric in the hips

  • Why: Knee-patch adds visual interest; slimmer legs show off your shape

Apple Shape (Carry Weight in Midsection)

  • Look for: High-rise wide waistbands, stretchy fabric, dark solid colours

  • Avoid: Low-rise, stiff fabrics, belts that pinch

  • Why: Wide waistband smooths and supports without digging in

Petite (Under 5'4" / 163cm)

  • Look for: Short/petite lengths, high-rise, vertical details

  • Avoid: Low-rise, breeches that bunch at the ankle

  • Why: High-rise and vertical lines elongate your leg

Tops That Flatter

Fuller Bust

  • Look for: V-necks or scoop necks, stretchy fabric, darker colours

  • Avoid: High necks, thin clingy fabrics

  • Why: V-neck elongates and balances the chest

Long Torso

  • Look for: Longer-length tops, high-low hems, waist details

  • Avoid: Cropped tops, shapeless tunics

  • Why: Longer length stays put in the saddle

Shorter Torso

  • Look for: Cropped or regular-length, vertical details, fitted styles

  • Avoid: Extra-long tops, horizontal stripes

  • Why: Fitted styles and vertical lines create length

Jackets: Getting the Proportion Right

Body Type Best Jacket Style
Petite Cropped or waist-length (keeps leg line long)
Tall Hip-length (balances proportions)
Fuller-figured Structured with clean lines and shaping at the waist

For everyone: Make sure there's enough room across the shoulders and arms to move freely. A jacket that pulls when you close your hip angle is too tight.

The Simple Colour Rule

Dark colours minimise. Light colours emphasise.

  • Minimise hips/thighs: Dark breeches + lighter top

  • Add curves: Lighter breeches or contrasting knee patches

  • Elongate torso: Dark top + lighter breeches

  • Balance fuller bust: Dark top + lighter bottoms

Quick Reference Card

Body Type Breeches Tops Jackets
Curvy / Pear High-rise, stretchy, dark V-neck, fitted Structured, hip-length
Athletic / Straight Mid-rise, knee-patch Fitted, vertical Cropped or waist-length
Apple High-rise, dark, wide band V-neck, longer Shaped at waist
Petite Short length, high-rise Fitted, vertical Cropped, waist-length
Tall Regular length Any, balanced Hip-length

The Golden Rule

Fit matters more than size.

A well-fitting size 16 looks infinitely better than an ill-fitting size 10. When trying on breeches, sit in a chair and close your hip angle (like you would in the saddle). If they pull, dig in, or ride up — try a different size or style.

Final Thought

The most beautiful thing you can wear in the saddle is confidence. When you feel comfortable, supported, and free in your riding wear, you'll move better and ride better.

Don't get hung up on sizes or labels. Find what works for you.
