Why You and Your Horse Both Deserve a Post-Ride Ritual

by Emma H 29 Aug 2026 0 Comments

You've just finished a great ride. You've cooled down your horse, untacked, and put everything away.

But there's one more thing you should do — and it's for both of you.

Most riders focus on their horse's cool-down but forget their own. They walk to the car, sit down, and drive home stiff, sore, and exhausted.

Here's a simple post-ride ritual that helps both you and your horse recover better, feel better, and come back stronger next time.

Why a Post-Ride Ritual Matters

Riding is a full-body workout for both of you. Your muscles tighten. Your horse's muscles tighten too. Your body needs to reset — and so does theirs.

Without a cool-down:

  • You'll feel stiff and sore the next day

  • Your horse may feel stiff too

  • Your flexibility decreases over time

  • Your riding position suffers

With a cool-down:

  • You both feel better immediately

  • You both recover faster

  • You stay flexible and balanced

  • Your riding improves

A few minutes of post-ride care makes all the difference.

Step 1: Walk Together (3 Minutes)

The best cool-down for both of you is a quiet walk. Together.

What to do: Instead of rushing to untack, take a few minutes to walk your horse on a loose rein. Let them stretch their neck and back. Walk in straight lines and gentle curves. Don't ask for anything — just let them relax.

Why it matters: Walking helps your horse's muscles release tension and flush out lactic acid. It also helps you transition mentally from riding mode to the rest of your day.

Pro tip: Use this time to check in with your horse. How are they moving? Are they sound? How's their breathing? This is your chance to notice anything that might need attention.

Step 2: Stretch Your Horse (2-3 Minutes)

After walking, your horse is ready for some gentle stretches.

What to do:

  • Neck stretches: Gently guide your horse's nose toward their shoulder, flank, and between their front legs. Hold each position for 10-15 seconds. This mobilises their neck and spine.

  • Limb stretches: Gently lift a foreleg forward and hold for 10 seconds. Repeat with the hind leg, gently stretching it forward. Never force a stretch — only go as far as your horse is comfortable.

Why it matters: Stretching helps prevent muscle tightness and soreness. It also improves your horse's flexibility and comfort for next time.

Pro tip: If your horse seems stiff or reluctant to stretch, don't push. They may be tight or sore from the ride. Listen to them. And if you're unsure about how to stretch safely, ask your instructor or vet to show you the proper technique.

Step 3: Breathe (1 Minute)

Your ride is over. Your heart is still pounding. Your horse is cooling down too.

What to do: Stand with your horse. Close your eyes. Take 5 slow, deep breaths. In through your nose, out through your mouth. Let your body calm down.

Why it matters: Deep breathing lowers your heart rate, reduces stress, and signals to your body that the work is done. Your horse will pick up on your calm energy too.

Pro tip: Use this moment to thank your horse. Just stand with them. Be present. It's a beautiful way to end a ride and deepen your connection.

Step 4: Stretch Your Legs (1 Minute)

Your legs are tight. Your hips are locked. Your calves are tired.

What to do:

  • Standing quad stretch: Grab your ankle and pull your heel toward your glutes. Hold for 20 seconds. Switch sides.

  • Standing calf stretch: Step your right foot forward and lean into a wall or your car. Keep your back leg straight. Hold for 20 seconds. Switch sides.

  • Hip flexor stretch: Step into a gentle lunge and push your hips forward. Hold for 20 seconds. Switch sides.

Why it matters: Stretching your legs helps prevent muscle tightness and soreness. It also improves your flexibility for next time.

Pro tip: These stretches are also great to do before you ride, especially if you're feeling tight.

Step 5: Stretch Your Back and Shoulders (1 Minute)

Your back is sore from sitting trot. Your shoulders are tight from holding the reins.

What to do:

  • Cat-cow stretch: Stand with your feet hip-width apart. Round your back, tucking your chin to your chest, then arch it, lifting your head and chest to the ceiling. Repeat 5 times.

  • Standing shoulder stretch: Reach your right arm across your chest. Pull it gently with your left arm. Hold for 20 seconds. Switch sides.

Why it matters: This releases tension in your back and shoulders. It helps prevent the rounded posture that can creep into your riding over time.

Step 6: Hydrate and Fuel (1 Minute)

You lost fluid and energy during your ride. Your body needs to replace it.

What to do: Drink a glass of water or a sports drink. If you have a snack (a banana, a granola bar, or some nuts), eat it now.

Why it matters: Rehydrating and refuelling helps your body recover faster. It prevents the post-ride crash.

Pro tip: Keep a water bottle and some snacks in your car or tack box. You'll always be prepared.

How to Make It a Habit

  1. Link it to something you already do. After you put your horse away, do your stretches right there in the barn. Or after you close your car door, take a minute to breathe before you drive.

  2. Start with one step. Don't try to do all five at once. Pick one — maybe the walking or the stretches — and do that consistently. Add the others over time.

  3. Make it non-negotiable. Treat it like part of your ride. Just as you wouldn't skip cooling down your horse, don't skip cooling down yourself.

  4. Be consistent. Like any habit, it takes time to stick. Notice how your body feels after a ride with vs. without the routine. The difference will motivate you to keep going.

Final Thought

Your horse isn't the only one who deserves a cool-down. You do too.

A post-ride ritual isn't just about recovery. It's about connection. It's about slowing down. It's about honouring the work you just did together.

So next time you ride, take a few minutes for both of you. You both deserve it.
